(John Adams--the 2nd President of the U.S., not the composer--apparently said much the same thing in a letter from around 1820, speaking of the American Revolution.)  

After all, if your revolutionary movement isn&#039;t strong enough to win *without* force of arms, there&#039;s not much meaning in winning.</description>
